Inside Taste & Traditions of Mostar: How a Local Experience Came Together

Mostar has no shortage of beautiful places to visit. But we wanted to create something that goes a little further than sightseeing.
The idea behind Taste & Traditions of Mostar started with a simple question: what if guests could experience an old Mostar house not only as a place to see, but as a place that feels alive again?
A house filled with voices, music, food, stories and people. A place where local traditions are not presented behind glass, but shared in the way they were meant to be — around a table, through conversation, song and hospitality.
That idea brought us to Bišćevića House.
More than a historic house
Set on the banks of the Neretva, Bišćevića House is one of Mostar’s most important surviving examples of Ottoman-era residential architecture. The house dates back to the 17th century and is particularly known for its traditional interior, courtyard and divanhana — the room once used for receiving guests and conversation.
Walking through the house gives visitors a sense of how people once lived in Mostar: the separation between public and private spaces, the objects used in everyday life, the carpets, woodwork and intimate courtyard hidden behind high walls.
But for us, the house was not only a beautiful setting.
It became the starting point for telling a much bigger story.
Bringing local life back into the space
To create the experience, we wanted to involve the people who are still keeping Mostar’s traditions alive today.
Instead of building a staged folklore show, the programme brings together different parts of the local community.
Local folklore performers introduce guests to traditional dances and costumes. Young sevdah singers bring one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most recognisable musical traditions into the house again. Local women prepare dishes using recipes that have been passed down through generations.
The food is not there simply as catering, and the music is not there simply as entertainment. Each element helps tell the story of everyday life in Mostar.
Guests hear the stories behind the house and the traditions, taste Bosnian and Herzegovinian dishes, enjoy local wine and experience live sevdah and folklore in an intimate setting.
For a few hours, Bišćevića House becomes a home again.
A different way to experience Mostar
Many travellers visit Mostar for the Old Bridge, walk through the Old Town and continue their journey a few hours later.
Those landmarks are an essential part of the city, but they are only one layer of Mostar.
The city is also its food, family traditions, songs, courtyards, hospitality and the stories people have carried from one generation to another.
Taste & Traditions of Mostar was created to give visitors access to that side of the city.
Over approximately 2.5 hours, guests experience storytelling, traditional food, Herzegovinian wine, live sevdah music and folklore inside one of Mostar's historic homes.
The group size is intentionally limited to up to 20 guests, allowing the evening to remain personal and relaxed rather than feeling like a large performance.
Created locally
An important part of the concept was ensuring that tourism could directly support the people who preserve local culture.
The experience creates space for local performers, young musicians, women preparing traditional food and other members of the community to participate in tourism not simply as service providers, but as storytellers and custodians of their own heritage.
For us, that is what makes the experience meaningful.
Culture stays alive when people continue to practise it, share it and find new audiences for it.
And tourism, when designed carefully, can help make that possible.

If you are visiting Mostar and want to go beyond the usual city tour, this is an evening designed to slow things down.
Come hungry, sit inside a centuries-old Mostar house, listen to sevdah, learn a little about the people who once lived here and meet some of the people keeping those traditions alive today.
